Roofing Substrate & Rigid Insulation Repair

Most people are familiar with the typical shingle roof substrate which is (for the most part) wood. The word ‘substrate’ in roofing is just another name for deck or underlying surface. It is simply the base on which the roof is built.

Other substrates include steel, concrete, gypsum and tectum to name a few. The condition of the roof substrate is paramount when considering roof related concerns. Without a healthy substrate there can be no roof installed.

Long periods of roof leaking (into the substrate) can lead to astronomical expenses related to correcting the damaged substrate. The point being that substrate repairs can dwarf the cost of normal surface roofing in certain excessive cases.

RIGID INSULATION

Click to view in high resolution... Between the substrate and the material used as roof surfacing is sometimes found rigid insulation. This is typically one half an inch, to several inches thick, and usually in 4 foot by 8 foot ‘boards’. Rigid insulation can be ‘permeable’ and ‘non permeable’. Permeable designating that it does absorb water, non permeable signifying it does not absorb water. Non permeable is usually more expensive but typically well worth it. One popular non permeable insulation would be ‘isocyanurate’. This is not only non permeable but offers a high ‘R’ value as well. Of course if you have a roof which is prone to leak from time to time the non permeable insulation would offer much more ‘forgiveness’. Water then passes directly through the roof without soaking into the insulation causing future ‘trapped moisture’ concerns.

Understanding how all these components can help (or harm) you is critical when building a new roof, or when repairing an old one. As your roofing contractor Cooper Roofing Corporation will discuss your individual situation with you. As our customer you will always be in a position to make sound judgments whenever your roof becomes a concern.

If you have any other questions regarding what your substrate or rigid insulation might be please don’t hesitate to contact us. We enjoy sharing the knowledge and understanding we have accumulated over the past many years. We also believe it is very much to our advantage in having well informed customers.
