"Time Was Running Out..." Cooper Roofing Corporation received an emergency phone call late one afternoon. A Philadelphia area university faced an urgent safety concern. "Loose tiles on the clock tower could fall and injure our students. Please check it out for us and, if possible, fix it immediately!"
After visiting the site that same day, Cooper advised the client of what to expect. Cooper then scheduled a repair crew with a crane for the following morning.
Part of the Clock Tower turret roof was about to fall. Some of the old tiles were hanging precariously, 90 feet above the busy pedestrian walk path below.
First thing in the morning the Cooper Roofing team was on site and ready to get to work. Riding the crane to the top of the tower Cooper's experts were able to get a first-hand look at the problem.
The situation was worse than the client suspected! Some of the roof's wood sheathing had rotted under the loose tiles causing a major compromise in the roof’s integrity.
With rotted sheathing being the root of our problem, it was clear this was not going to be a simple repair. The conical shape of the roof, and the integrated copper flashings nearby, dictated careful planning. The situation was quickly assessed and a new repair procedure adopted. Thanks to Cooper Roofing’s years of experience, knowledge, and expertise, this intricate repair was executed without altering crane use (saving money) or the cost quoted to our client. It's adaptability like this that proves a contractor's expertise and worth.
Later that day, the 110 year old Clock Tower roof was back to normal. Cooper's work was not only cost effective, but sympathetic to the original architecture and aesthetic value of the structure.
After years of blazing sun, ice storms, and lightning strikes the Tower continues to stand tall, a witness to the care and commitment of the Cooper team. The conical terra cotta tile roof continues to stand as a landmark on the campus.
